Plant of the Day: Plantago mejor
Plantago mejor, or the plantain, has magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and K. It is an anti-inflammatory, and has been used to prevent cancer.
Plantains have tannin, which helps stop bleeding, and allantoin, which helps heal injured skin cells. The seeds have high fiber and can be used as a natural laxative. You could make a tea from the leaves, or use the roots to help with a toothache or headache.
Heating the leaves and placing them on the injured area helps with swollen joints, sore muscles, sore feet, and sprains. Both plantain leaves and juice have been used in lotions and can help treat sunburns, stings, snakebites, rashes, burns, and poison ivy.
I found these fun facts at GreenMedInfo. Let me know if there's a plant you'd like me to research as a future Plant of the Day!
